I am a militant atheist and I will shove my beliefs down your throat. I do this not because I aspire to convert you to my way of thinking. Such a goal, aside from being nearly impossible, would do a disservice to the label of atheist that I so cherish.
I have encountered no information in all of my readings that would lead me to believe that a stupid Christian or Muslim would be transmuted by non-belief into a thoughtful and intelligent individual. Religion makes the claim that it can better men by virtue of their acceptance of its tenants. It would be antithetical to the devotion that I have to my beliefs to make a similar claim regarding them.
Why then, if I haven’t your conversion in mind, do I so forcefully argue my position? Is it to assert my superiority over you and your mode of thought? Insecure though I may well be, I highly doubt that this is the right answer simply because my superiority is, to me if to no one else, evident—and given the depth of your ignorance, it is also admittedly irrelevant. Being more intelligent than the pious is about as impressive as being more agile than a pinecone.
Knowing myself as well as I do, I suspect that the reason for my iconoclasm is akin to the reason that as a child I shouted at my classmates that there was no such being as Santa Claus. I do it to hurt your feelings. I do it to penalize you for your foolish inability to perceive an obvious truth. There is no God. There are no gods. There is no special truth to be found in all the holy writ ever concocted by man—at least no more than can be found in the works of Mark Twain and William Shakespeare (I am being unnecessarily generous to your cute story books here, and unnecessarily cruel to Twain and Shakespeare).

I'm sure you are already quite aware of this but whatever. not all theists are just stupid, a lot of them have just never truly analyzed or thought about their beliefs i have a friend recently a christian who was a perfectly rational and logical person, but just dont bother to think about their belief in god, once they did, they were free. it takes a while for the get past the barriers religion sets up in the mind, but if they are mildly intelligent they can realize the truth. so ya you aren't going to convert the dumbass Christians, but you probably affect the naive intelligent ones

I notice some "atheist" will talk all the appropriately deserved trash about Christians, even Muslims. But they often fail to mention the Jews. Which leads some people I know to insist that most atheist are Jews using atheism as free pass to bash the other religions.

TJ, wasting your time and energy ranting about how right (and superior) you are isn't helping anyone or anything.
You can bash religion all day long. Regardless of whether God exists, I think any intelligent reader of this blog can agree that its passages on humility and doing to others how they would do to you would probably do you some good. But then again, as you have observed yourself, you can't convert the stubborn, so I'm wasting my breath.
Do you really think that intentionally aggravating people is a mature, balanced thing to do? Do you think this somehow validates you? Does it make you feel better about yourself? Grow up, boy. You are old enough to start acting like an adult.
This is why so few people don't bother taking your arguments seriously when you profess them the way you do, in the tone and with the attitude in which you do. I suppose this is your atheist equivalent of a Christian damning you to hell for not believing. It certainly doesn't put on you on any high ground.
I would like to point out, to both TJ and all the commentators here, that there are very smart people - people who would put your feeble minds to their knees - who actually convert to Christianity as adults. Trust me, they exist.
So, save all your nonsense about "seeing the light with logic" when it comes to joining the Church of Atheism because, when you actually meet people who make you feel and look stupid and are Christian converts, your claims don't hold up to even your own limited experiences let alone those of mainstream America.
Also, save your bashing and the conclusion that I must be a Christian apologist. Just because I think TJ, and all of the commentors on this blog, suffer the disease of youth does not mean I am for - or against - any religious principles.

I have only very recently discovered your commentary, and I find you to be smarter the more I look at your stuff. I particulary found your 500th posting to be helpful for me to become a better arguer. Lastly, I have always considered being and atheist as the clearest sign of true intelligent. I was a Christain as a child, but then I grew up. My username might suck, but at least there's no numbers in it.
You may find this hard to believe, but there are Christians who believe what you believe in every way, except of course in the existance of God. My father has been a Christian his entire life.
Does he believe the Earth was created 10,000 years ago? No, intuition aside, that is physically impossible. Does he believe the world was flooded and that Noah collected two of every animal into a giant ark? No, that's physically impossible. Does he believe Jesus resurrected from the dead? No, that's physically impossible. Does he believe there is a God? Come to think of it, he probably doesn't. Nevermind. Anyway, my point is: stop lumping all Christians in with idiots like VFX.
